Bristol Rugby coach Liam Middleton delighted with another confidence-boosting cup success
LIAM Middleton was delighted with how his Bristol players backed up their victory at Cardiff with a win over Ulster Ravens – and feels confidence has been restored ahead of the Championship visit of Bedford next weekend.
Bristol, who have so often used the British & Irish Cup for experimentation, set out to win their first two games in this season's competition to rediscover some momentum after a dismal run of three straight league defeats.
And, after winning 23-14 in the Welsh capital eight days earlier, they ensured a 100 per cent winning start to Pool One with a 34-28 victory against Ulster Ravens at the Memorial Stadium yesterday.
Ulster's starting line-up contained a wealth of first-team experience, including Roger Wilson, who scored two tries, Robbie Diack and Neil McComb – and the Northern Irish province tested Bristol across the field.
But the hosts, inspired by a gutsy display from No 8 Mitch Eadie and 19 points from Tristan Roberts, had enough to storm to the top of their pool after a restorative fortnight on the field.
"It's always good to back wins with wins," said head coach Middleton. "We probably haven't done a lot of that this season so far, whereas we did a fair bit of it last season, so that was an important win for us.
"Our philosophy this year with the cup is that it complements the league season. It's not above the league season, but it complements what we do – and two good wins in the cup, against two good sides, is really pleasing.
"The two results we've had will make things a bit easier going into the Bedford week. I think what we needed was just confidence – and even having a fuller squad training brings confidence.
"It's not just what's on the field, it's not just winning, it's having everyone out on the training field raring to go. I think the win, plus the return of a lot of players, will hopefully give us a good start to next week."
Bristol yesterday welcomed Jack Tovey, James Merriman, Redford Pennycook, Adrian Jarvis and Ross Johnston back from injury, but another returning player, Bryan Rennie, suffered a knee injury early in the match and had to be replaced.
His departure saw Tovey, who had been pencilled in for a 20-minute run-out following five months out with a back injury, thrown into the contest with only eight minutes on the clock.
But Middleton said: "We had only planned for Tovey to play 20 minutes at the end of the game, because he hasn't played for five months. It didn't work out that way, unfortunately, and we wouldn't do that in a Championship game, but with a cup game you can get some guys back from injury.
"It's a real blow for us with Bryan being injured again – he's had a torrid start to the season. I think he's done a bit of cartilage damage to his knee, so we're not having a lot of luck with our injuries – but at least a lot of good players are coming back into the side and we can now start to build on that."
Both the performance of George Watkins, making his first start of the season, and the return of Tovey – "a natural full-back" – pleased Middleton, who confirmed he is likely to be without Jon Goodridge (neck injury) for a further three months.
Middleton also praised Eadie and winger Ryan Edwards for taking their chances while some of their more experienced team-mates have been injured.
"The flip-side of our injury situation is that two of our star performers today were Ryan Edwards and Mitch Eadie – and they've almost emerged on the back of a big injury list," said Middleton. "Sometimes, you've got to look at the positives of a negative scenario, and what we now have to do is push on with those guys."

Google revamps Developer Console for Google Play, eases tracking Android app ratings over time
Android developers need as much tender loving care for their interfaces as the users, don't they? Google thinks so, as it just reworked Google Play's Developer Console to offer a more direct, faster loading design. Along with scaling elegantly to let app writers see and manage many releases at a glance, the makeover gives developers a much more refined historical breakdown of app ratings. Creators can filter the star count through Android versions, carriers, countries, language, updates and even specific devices -- if you're convinced adding Kyocera Echo support was the ticket to improved ratings, you might have a chance to prove it. For anyone who isn't that determined to keep everyone happy, there's still a simplified publishing process and automatic translations for app descriptions in the store. Developers comfortable with a few limits on APK bundles can try the new console in a rough but mostly ready state ahead of its wider launch in the near future.

AOL Links with Google's YouTube for Original Content Syndication
AOL, one of the biggest video destinations in the United States, has linked a deal to publish its original videos on YouTube as a means to gain additional scale, says Ran Harnevo, SVP for Video at AOL On, in this interview with Beet.TV He says that some 20,000 AOL clips are now on YouTube. YouTube Optimizes Search Results By Factoring In Time Watched
YouTube's current marketing strategy is centered around engagement. While some other video sharing sites are doing whatever they can for raw views, YouTube is beginning to focus on what keeps users coming back. Though they've had mixed results with this new focus, new updates to the site's search and analytics features will help promote content creators who engage viewers rather than briefly entertaining them. The first change deals with YouTube's search results. Search used to work in such a way that a video's hits were the main factor in determining where it landed on each results page. The new system will improve things for both YouTube and its users. YouTube can drive engagement by encouraging viewers to watch longer videos. Meanwhile, users can get a more accurate measure of what's actually popular with fans. For instance, at first glance, you would say that Halo: Forward Unto Dawn is less popular than 'Guy Runs Into Wall' because it has been viewed about 1.5 million times fewer. However, the former video is 20 minutes while the latter is six seconds, and this makes Halo in most ways a better entertainment product. Now, Halo will be sorted much higher for all to see, while 'Guy Runs Into Wall' may drop a couple spots. Now all we need to do is find a search term that encompasses both of these videos. Hmm

Will Twitter Enter The Market With Its Own Video Hosting Service?
People dig Twitter. I used to not 'get' its appeal, but now I understand: you can learn what your tech-savvy uncle had for lunch, effectively market a product, or just laugh at your favorite feeds (the debates would not have been nearly as funny without @SilentJimLehrer, and that's a FACT.) However, despite the fact that everyone loves it, Twitter can't make money. Could taking control of video posted to the website be the solution Twitter is looking for? The social media giant is considering adding its own in-house video service, wresting power away from third party companies such as TwitVid. This change would make sense for Twitter for several reasons. By the current setup, it is third parties, and not Twitter, who make ad revenue from videos posted to the site. However, as this exhaustive article notes, users often conflate the third-party apps with Twitter, and complain to Twitter directly when something on TwitVid gets changed or doesn't work. Therefore, Twitter has to deal with the negatives of the video services it supports without getting to reap any of the benefits

NTT DoCoMo's i beam tablet prototype is driven by your eyes (video)
Another prototype from DoCoMo aimed at Nihon's commuters, the i beam concept tablet forgoes any touch at all, allowing the user (once they're at the specified 'sweet spot') to navigate around apps and screens using your eyes. Two sensors along the bottom edge of the tablet track both of your eyes and after a slightly laborious configuration setup, we were able to tour around the prototype slabs features without laying a finger on it. The navigational dot was a little erratic, but we'll put that down to prototype nerves. The tablet was otherwise able to follow our eye-line and fulfill what we wanted it to do.
Returning to the home screen by targeting the kill box in the top right corner proved to be the most difficult thing -- we soon resorted to tapping at the screen for that. DoCoMo showcased an eye-controlled game, alongside picture galleries, a web browser and a reader app. The e-book client seemed to be the most heavily involved, with the ability to look up words with a hard-stare, and flip pages by eyeing the two lower corners. The Japanese carrier isn't planning a consumer launch any time soon -- and the hardware comes with a pretty pronounced chin at the moment, but if you like staring at someone staring at a tablet, our eyes-on is after the break.
