BRISTOL golfer Chris Wood hit a late birdie to give himself a chance of making the cut at the flagship BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth.
Facing the prospect of finishing two-over par, Wood approached the par-five 18th hole knowing a birdie was a must.
He knocked in his putt to give him a first-round total of 73 and leave him with a realistic chance of being around for the weekend action.
Two-under par after seven holes saw Wood break into the top-ten early on in his round, but a disastrous turn saw him give both shots back. The long par-four 13th saw him drop another shot and a further bogey at the 15th meant he was two-over par and facing a real challenge today.
Meanwhile, Rory McIlroy and David Drysdale illustrated the fine line between success and failure on the opening day of the BMW PGA Championship.
World number one McIlroy went out of bounds by an inch and threw a club as a two-over-par 74 left him in danger of missing the halfway cut for a second successive tournament – and possibly losing top spot again to Luke Donald.
In contrast, Drysdale, 290 places below him in the rankings, could not believe his luck as his second shot to the final hole went into the water and bounced out again.
"You could hit 1,000 balls and never have it happen," said the 37-year-old Scot, who went on to birdie the par five for a six-under-par round of 66 and the joint lead with Ireland's Peter Lawrie.
